In the 1940s, the Gaudi Hall, with its grand and opulent setting, hosted numerous fashion shows by designers from Pertegaz and Bastida to modern designers. The great Josephine Baker could be found performing at the Parrilla Hall, while Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballé sang together for the first time at the piano of the Cugat Hall.

El Palace Barcelona’s walls have been silent witnesses to the life and work of numerous artists, from Ella Fitzgerald and Pablo Picasso to Josephine Baker and Salvador Dali, who all stayed in residence at El Palace Barcelona during their prestigious careers, and now have their eponymous Art Suites in the hotel. With fond creative memories of the past, the hotel now looks to the future as a modern patron of the visual and performing arts and create new experiences for its present and future guests.

Fashion

Santa Eulalia, 180 years of fashion

The exhibition showcases 12 historic haute couture dresses plus vintage posters from 1924 to 1935 in three of the hotel’s spaces – the Lobby, the Hall, and Sala Cugat.

The exhibition celebrates the relationship between Santa Eulalia and El Palace Barcelona, which has hosted many of the brand's fashion shows.

El Palace Barcelona presents its latest exhibition in a series of artistic partnerships it regularly hosts, bringing together two historic establishments of Barcelona’s Eixample district: El Palace Barcelona and Santa Eulalia – the most prestigious multi-brand luxury fashion store for men and women in the city since 1843.

To mark the Santa Eulalia’s 180th anniversary, El Palace Barcelona will exhibit a selection of 12 dresses tailored in its workshops between 1926, the date of its first haute couture show, and 1990, when it moved into luxury ready-to-wear brands.. The exhibition will run until 17 November and is completely free of charge.

The exhibition is a journey back in time when Barcelona was a leader in fashion design, and Santa Eulalia its benchmark. By 1926, Santa Eulalia was already a pioneer in putting on haute couture fashion shows in Barcelona. Since then, dresses and millinery  from its workshops have dressed all of Barcelona and beyond.

Displayed across the hotel’s Lobby, Hall and Sala Cugat, and arranged in the categories of “Day and the Street” and “Night and Cocktails”, the exhibition immerses the visitor in the wonderful world of haute couture through carefully selected dresses and hats. The exhibition concludes with a series of vintage posters produced between 1924 and 1935 from Santa Eulalia’s historic archive and republished in limited editions by Stick No Bills, a company specialising in contemporary signage which combines artisanal printing techniques with cutting-edge technology to produce museum-quality prints for collectors.

The exhibition celebrates the close relationship between Santa Eulalia and El Palace Barcelona, as the salons of this historic hotel always hosted the fashion shows run by the Cooperativa de Alta Costura (Haute Couture Cooperative) which showed innovations from Santa Eulalia, among others.
