In the 1940s, the Gaudi Hall, with its grand and opulent setting, hosted numerous fashion shows by designers from Pertegaz and Bastida to modern designers. The great Josephine Baker could be found performing at the Parrilla Hall, while Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballé sang together for the first time at the piano of the Cugat Hall.

El Palace Barcelona’s walls have been silent witnesses to the life and work of numerous artists, from Ella Fitzgerald and Pablo Picasso to Josephine Baker and Salvador Dali, who all stayed in residence at El Palace Barcelona during their prestigious careers, and now have their eponymous Art Suites in the hotel. With fond creative memories of the past, the hotel now looks to the future as a modern patron of the visual and performing arts and create new experiences for its present and future guests.

ART

"In Movement"

The paintings and sculptures “in movement” by Íñigo Manterola take over the hall of El Palace Barcelona.

With the firm will to continue investing in the close link between hospitality and art, as well as with the intention of supporting emerging artists, El Palace Barcelona launched a cycle of exhibitions since last autumn in its great Hall, which this spring will shine with the hypnotic work of Iñigo Manterola. The pieces, from the “Tránsitos” and “Paseos por la porta” collections, can be seen beetween March 23rd and September 5th of 2022.

Both series arise as a result of the artist's interest in movement. After the death of his father, a fisherman by profession, like his entire paternal line, Manterola enlisted in a bonito fishing boat. There he is surprised by the movement of the deck embodied by the fishermen, the water, the fish, etc. and it is from then on that he tries to capture it in his works.

Manterola begins his experimentation by drawing movement from a single line that undulates on the canvas to later draw space from the same three-dimensional sculpted curves. Finally, he will return to the canvas, but changing the brush for thicker brushes that allow him to add texture and relief, integrating that third dimension into the painting. And it is that in Manterola, painting and sculpture establish a necessary dialogue in which the steps that are carried out in one of the disciplines are integrated into the other and vice versa.
